Children are at a higher risk for poison or injury because of their natural tendency to touch and taste things. The greatest risk is to children aged 2 and younger.

According to Safe Kids, more than 33,000 calls were made to poison centers for laundry packet incidents since 2012. That equates to one call every hour.

Several children have been hospitalized for trouble breathing, excessive vomiting, severe eye burns and loss of consciousness.

Now, the American Cleaning Institute is working with manufacturers to improve the way packaging is labeled.

Safe Kids says parents should keep liquid laundry packets out of children's reach and sight. It's also good to keep the packets in their original container and to keep the container closed.

If a child gets into liquid laundry packets, call the Poison Help hotline immediately at 1-800-222-1222.
