Sailboat mast hits Main Street Bridge

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The mast of a sailboat hit the Main Street Bridge downtown near the Jacksonville Landing on Friday morning.

Traffic on the bridge was not affected.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the mast hit part of a water line on the bridge. Inspectors were the assessing damage and broken water line, but officials said there was no structural damage.

A couple were on board and no one was injured when the boat hit the bridge about 9:15 a.m., according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The two passengers, who are French Canadian, misread the current, officials said.

Officials said the two do not speak English, so it was hard to communicate with them.

A boat was able to tow the sailboat away from the bridge, and the two on board were continuing on to St. Augustine.
