San Marco residents fed up with flooding

Councilman says another drainage pump is planned for the area

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Waves of rain Monday brought more than puddles, especially in areas like San Marco, where residents have gotten used to the hassle of high water.

For some, the drainage systems just aren't cutting it, and many, like San Marco resident Lauren Rashaw, are simply fed up.

"Some afternoons when I come home, I can't park on my own street because it's so flooded," Rashaw said. "I have to park down the street or I have to go spend my time elsewhere to see if the drainage goes down."

That was a problem for some people over the weekend when their cars got stuck after parking on the street. Several years ago the city installed two pumping systems. One is off Children's Way. The other is at Landon Park.

A video shared with News4Jax showed the drains flat out rejecting the water on Monday because there was so much.

City Councilman Don Redman said the city has plans to add another pump to La Salle Street. But it would carry a very hefty price tag, at least $7 million. He said how quickly that pump is built comes down to when the money comes in.

"The concerns are the same concerns over and over again," said City Councilman Don Redman. "Everybody knows what our financial situation is like in the city. We're doing the best we can with what we have to pay with."

With more rain in the forecast, San Marco neighbors are getting ready. They hope the city can do something soon.

"Hopefully, they'll just look into doing a little project in helping our little community out," Rashaw said. "I know I can't be the only one who is frustrated."
