2 injured in moped crash in St. Augustine

US-1 at Island Landing Drive was closed while FHP investigated

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A teenager and a man riding a moped were severely injured Thursday night when a Jeep hit them from behind in St. Augustine.

Brandon Collins, 21, was driving the moped and Fiona Hardy, 17, was his passenger.  Both of them were from St. Augustine.

The Florida Highway Patrol said they were traveling southbound on US-1 near Island Landing Drive around 7:30 p.m. when a Jeep Patriot hit them from behind.

The driver of the Jeep, Stephen Ziembroski, 21, of Tallahassee, told troopers he didn't see the moped, according to the crash report.

All southbound lanes of US-1 at Island Landing Drive were closed while troopers investigated.

The moped riders were airlifted to UF Health Jacksonville. Hardy sustained critical injuries and Collins sustained serious injuries, according to FHP.  Ziembroski was not injured.

FHP said the moped riders were not wearing helmets.  

The crash report said this was not an alcohol related crash but charges were pending.
