JSO: Employee smuggles contraband to inmate

Police: Corrections officer sneaks cigarettes, adult magazines to inmate in jail

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville Sheriff's Office corrections officer has been charged with slipping contraband to an inmate in the Duval County jail.

Undersheriff Pat Ivey said a female friend of a jail inmate brought cigarettes and sexually explicit magazines to corrections officer Brandon Scott Maynard, who smuggled them into the jail and gave them to the inmate in exchange for payment.

Maynard, 42, is charged with one count of introducing contraband into a jail and one count of conspiracy to introduce contraband into a jail, Ivey said.

"We should not develop those types of relationships," Ivey said. "Case in point, right here what we're dealing with. It makes the officer, if they don't have a strong enough personality, become vulnerable for things of this nature."

Maynard, a three-year JSO employee, has elected to go on leave without pay during the investigation, Ivey said.

Ivey said police would not be releasing the name of the inmate involved in the case, but said the inmate was in custody for "significant felony charges." The inmate has not been charged in this incident, Ivey said.

Ivey said the investigation began in August when police received an unsolicited tip from an inmate.

"I'm kind of sad to say that we discovered the allegations were true," Ivey said.

Police said Maynard, who had no previous incidents on his record with JSO, smuggled the items in on several occasions.

This arrest is the 11th of a JSO employee this year. There were six such arrests in 2014, Ivey said. Previous arrests in 2015 include:
