The Highway Patrol and Bradford County Sheriff's Office responded about 4:30 a.m. to the intersection of U.S. 301 and Northwest 246th Street after the woman was found dead in the road.

The Sheriff's Office told News4Jax that her head injuries indicated that she may have been injured somewhere else and then left on the highway.

But the Highway Patrol said it later learned Ellis was walking south on U.S. 301, near the median, when she was struck by an unknown vehicle that left the scene.

Sheriff's Office detectives will be conducting a joint investigation with the Highway Patrol.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 904-966-6161.
