Sheriff's Office warns about spoofed calls

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A St. Johns County man reported a suspicious incident Tuesday involving the spoofing of the Sheriff's Office main number.

The victim drove to a district substation after receiving a cellphone all that displayed the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office main number of 904-824-8304.

The caller, who had a foreign accent, told the complainant they were driving behind him and were going to arrest him.

The victim told the caller to meet him at the substation.

The suspect called the victim back twice and hung up quickly after a detective identified himself with the victim's phone.

The victim said he received another spoofed call with a 301 area code earlier in the day. The caller told the victim they were with the IRS and said he was going to be arrested if he didn't send in money.

The Sheriff's Office would like to warn people that law enforcement agencies, federal agencies and the courts will never call residents demanding money for outstanding fines or tickets by phone, especially with pre-paid cards.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up and report it to your local law enforcement agency.

Since spoofed calls most likely originate from other countries, the laws in the receiver's country may not apply to the caller.
