Shipyards soil samples taken

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In the first visible step toward the possible development of the so-called shipyards property along the riverfront between downtown and Metropolitan Park, crews have begun taking soil samples.

Last month, Shad Khan unveiled his vision for the Shipyards, a 48-acre project that would include multifamily housing, commercial space, a hotel, restaurants and bars, multilevel community fields, an amphitheater and public parks, a boardwalk and docking space for a USS Adams naval museum.

A company called Transamerican Testing and Drilling began taking soil samples on the property Wednesday, testing for contaminants in the soil or groundwater from the the property's previous life hosting a shipbuilding facility.

There was no word on whether the company was hired by the city or Khan's company, Iguana Investment's Florida.
