JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Tan Mayhew says she had no idea so many children skip school because they are embarrassed by the condition of their shoes or their shoes are too small to wear to class.

"My sister is a social worker with the school district and she said you'd be amazed how many students will not attend the first two weeks of school because they don't have shoes," said Mayhew, who started Kicks for the Kids four years ago.

The reality is that for most young children the shoes they wore last year will not fit them this year.  That's why Mayhew and News4Jax are asking for your help by donating new or gently used shoes for kindergarten to 12th grade students.

"Gently used means something you would want your children to wear, don't give away anything you wouldn't wear," asks Mayhew.

They don't have to be tennis shoes. Ballet slippers, cleats, dress shoes, Kicks for the Kids needs them all. You can drop them off at WJXT's studios, 4 Broadcast Place, Jacksonville 32207 or at any one of these drop off locations.   The deadline has been extended to August 7.
