Signing up for health care

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – If you paid your taxes this year and had to pay a fine for not having 2014 health care coverage, you have until midnight to sign up for this year. It's called the tax special enrollment period and it's giving uninsured people one more opportunity to get insured and avoid paying a penalty next year.

The fine for not having health insurance for 2014 was $95 per adult in the family or one percent of household income, whichever is higher. For 2015, the fine increases to $325 per adult in the family or two percent of household income, whichever is higher.

"Our job as navigators is to help them find some sort of coverage preventive care something we can help them on that." Angela DeMonbreun with the health planning council of Northeast Florida says she can't stress enough the importance of health care.

If you faced a fine on your 2014 tax return for not having health coverage, today is your last chance to enroll for 2015 health insurance. She suggests getting in touch with a navigator who can easily help you through the process.

"How to find a provider in their area, how to work through that insurance language-- we can help you with all of that and we can delve into your insurance coverage to help you find a provider and even help you evaluate them," said DeMonbreun.

To get started, simply call 211 and a navigator can help you over the phone. They can also get you an appointment with a navigator in person if you prefer that.
