Devices found at Lake City gas station not skimmers

LAKE CITY, Fla. – Eight devices discovered at a gas station in Lake City on Tuesday turned out not to be credit card skimmers, according to the Lake City Police Department.

LCPD said police were contacted by SunState Federal Credit Union after several customers' accounts were compromised. The credit union's fraud department said the cards were all used between Dec. 30 and Jan. 2 at the Stop N Go gas station at 1263 NW U.S. 90.

Officers contacted the gas station manager who met them with a technician and opened the gas pumps. Eight devices thought to be skimmers were found attached to the mother boards of the pumps. They were immediately removed.

LCPD said further investigation showed the devices removed were not credit card skimmers but actually heaters for the circuit board, which are commonly found on fuel pumps in colder climates. The devices are roughly 25 years old and could easily be confused with skimmers on pumps, LCDP said.

LCPD reminds credit and debit card users to routinely check their accounts to catch fraud. To prevent fraud at the pump or an ATM, users are recommended to complete transactions inside the store or bank.

Users who discover they have been the victims of fraud should contact their banking institution immediately.
