ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – St. Augustine police say they have done all their interviews except one in the investigation into the incident at the Conch House Marina Resort on May 26 in which they say Maurice Jones-Drew was involved.
That one interview is of Jones-Drew.
Witnesses told police the Jaguars running back sucker-punched security guard Kasim Howard. An attorney for the Conch House says the surveillance video clearly shows Jones-Drew punching Howard while he was trying to intervene in a confrontation between one of Jones-Drew's entourage and another security guard.
Police spokesman Mark Samson said that's not necessarily the case.
"We've enhanced it, and from what I'm told, it doesn't change much," Samson said. "It still shows the same group of people at the Conch House. It didn't enhance enough to make out clear faces or anything like that."
Jones-Drew's agent says he was not involved in the altercation.
Police say they will send the results of their investigation to the state attorney's office by the end of the week, with or without talking to Jones-Drew. It would be up to the state attorney's office what, if any, charges will be filed.
"He technically doesn't have to be a part of the interview process, with his busy schedule or whatever," Samson said. "We can box it up however and send it to the state attorney's office. It just makes it easier to have a full package."
Jones-Drew is currently named in a misdemeanor battery complaint.
Howard, the man making the allegations, in a YouTube video refers to himself as Kasim "The American Dream" Howard, a professional boxer.
"I fought all the guys up to two in the top 10 in the country, and I fought the second guy and I lost," he says in the video.
Howard has lengthy arrest record dating back to 2001, including allegations of battery, threatening to harm a public servant, domestic violence by strangulation, and tampering with a witness. According to court records, all of his past cases were thrown out.
Howard also tried to sue St. Johns County for false imprisonment and excessive force, but that case was thrown out as well.
