St. Johns County man arrested in November hit-and-run

Garrison Highsmith, 21, charged in incident that killed Madison Meyer

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A 21-year-old St. Johns County man was arrested early Thursday evening in connection to a fatal hit-and-run incident that happened in November, deputies said.

On Nov. 23, Madison Meyer, 26, was riding his bicycle on Hilltop Road when he was struck from behind by a vehicle which then left the scene, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said it received an anonymous tip the following day about a 2014 Kia Soul that was involved in the crash. The tip gave an address on Prince Road in St. Augustine where the Kia Soul could be found.

Detectives went to the home and found the vehicle covered with a tarp, deputies said.

A search warrant was secured for the vehicle, which was seized and taken to be processed.

Deputies said during the multi-month investigation the driver has been identified as Garrison David Highsmith, 21.

Based on witness statements and evidence collected, an arrest warrant for charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death and tampering with evidence was secured, the Sheriff's Office said.

Highsmith was arrested without incident and was booked into the County Jail on bonds totaling $225,000.
