St. Johns County to hire 18 new firefighters

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A grant is allowing St. Johns County Fire & Rescue to hire 18 new firefighter EMTs and paramedics.

SJCFR has announced an open application period for hiring the firefighters, which are being funded through a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant.

The department provides fire suppression, prevention, inspection, and ALS rescue services for a resident population base of 209,000, covering 608 square miles. St. Johns County boasts 42 miles of coastline and is home to historic St. Augustine, the "nation's oldest city."

The positions being hired are shift-level positions (24/48) and are primarily concerned with emergency and non-emergency activities, including fire suppression, emergency medical rescue, fire prevention and special operations. Those operations include USAR, ocean rescue and hazardous materials response, and the life safety education/planning/enforcement components of Fire-Rescue operations.

The pay range for the positions is $34,790.80, and the deadline for applications is Sept. 4.

To be eligible for the position of firefighter for SJCFR, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Possess and maintain current Florida EMT or Paramedic certification. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support card.
  • Possess and maintain current Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance.
  • Possess a valid Class "E" Florida Driver's License. Driving record must meet the Department requirements for hire concerning Class A and Class B offenses.
  • Be a nonuser of tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application, as evidenced by sworn affidavit. (Florida Statute 633.34).
  • Successful completion of the Firefighters Abilities Test administered by the First Coast Technical College or any other Florida municipality or county which utilized the Firefighter-Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT).
  • Must pass medical exam (NFPA 1582) after conditional job offer is made.
