St. Nicholas residents wonder about sound from Daily's Place concerts

Jaguars officials say amphitheater designed to reduce noise across river

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One more day until the Daily’s Place amphitheater opens at the stadium in Jacksonville.

And now crews are putting finishing touches on the site in preparation for tomorrows christening. New landscaping has been added today and the city and Jags say the shows are set to go.

When this new venue was coming to fruition, it raised concerns with those who live across the river, in the  St. Nicholas area. They’ve complained about loud concerts at Metro Park in the past.

"Do you ever go to the stop sign or stop light and the guy next to you is 'boom boom boom' and your whole car is rattling? Well, that's what the riverside is like," said St. Nicholas resident Bryant Chevalier.

Chevalier and his family have put up with noise from concerts at Metro Park for years, like the "Welcome to Rockville" performances that he said shook the entire neighborhood.

According to Jaguars president Mark Lamping, Daily’s Place was designed with them in mind. The speakers face toward the stadium and not along the river, but Chevalier and others are unsure if that is the solution.

"I'm concerned that it could be a problem if it's managed the same way that the concerts are currently managed," Chevalier said. "Meaning that the music is so loud and it's really the base that it just thumps every house there along the river and it's unbelievable."

But there are others with houses along the river who said it just shows progress.

"It may or may not be (a problem) but I think it's kind of your attitude about it," said Mary Maszy, who lives along the river. "I think it brings a lot to the city, and I'm certainly thrilled to have entertainment so close to us."

People may find out tonight if it will be a problem. News4Jax has learned that there will be a sound check tonight with a local band to see if everything works.
