Standing at work improves your health

New research found standing every few hours makes a difference

If you want to get in better shape this year-you should not only increase your physical activity, but also stand at work. That's according to new research from Kansas State University.

"Those who were more active by doing more physical activity and also sitting less, they had the best chance of excellent health," explained Richard Rosencranz, Kansas State University human nutrition professor.

Researchers found people who sit for fewer hours and are more active will reduce their risk of chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, heart disease, breast cancer and colon cancer. The goal of the research was to find a model for successful aging.

We all know we need to be more active, but this research found that something as simple as standing at work every few hours makes a difference. That's because sitting turns off an important molecule needed for energy.

"So we're basically telling our bodies to shut down the processes that help to stimulate metabolism throughout the day," said Kansas State University Human's Sara Rosencranz.

The researchers say they are now seeking a solution to chronic disease.
