James Tadros competency hearing delayed

Man accused of attacking girl in Best Buy restroom; hearing moved to Sept.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After three psychiatric evaluations of the man who tried to drown  a 9-year-old girl in a Best Buy bathroom, a state agency now says the man is competent to stand trial.

James Tadros, 31, who is charged with attempted murder in the 2013 incident, was transferred from a state mental health facility in the Panhandle back to the Duval County jail for a hearing Thursday. But the hearing was passed by the judge and re-scheduled for Sept. 16.

The Agency for Persons with Disabilities, which was responsible for his care when Tadros was declared incompetent, believes he can now face a trial while continuing to receive treatment for autism.

Results of a third evaluation are expected to be revealed during the hearing.

If Tadros is found competent at that hearing, prosecutors will ask the judge to set a trial date.

Police said Tadros lured the victim into the restroom of the Southside Boulevard store, then attacked her and pushed her head into a toilet. She fought back, and the commotion she raised brought store employees into the bathroom. They held Tadros for police.
