State officials gather for education summit

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Following a summer of debate and controversy in Florida's education system, state officials are gathering in Clearwater for a hastily-arranged, three-day summit to address pending issues.

Gov. Rick Scott called the summit, which is scheduled to begin Monday afternoon to address everything from the state's A-through-F grading system, teacher evaluations and new standards known as the Common Core.

"Our students need and deserve a quality education that emphasizes critical thinking and analysis," said Scott. "Our teachers and schools need our support as we continue to compete nationally and globally in preparing students for success in college, career and in life."

Scott asked that the meetings focus on four areas: state standards, assessment testing, school grades and teacher evaluations.

The summit will be webcast on the Florida Department of Education website, beginning at 12:55 p.m. Monday.
