Spurrier, 70, was in his 11th season as coach of the Gamecocks after returning to college football from a brief NFL career.

After returning Spurrier turned the Gamecocks into a winning program with three straight 11-win seasons from 2011 to 2013 but fell into a slump starting in 2014.
