Stopped train frustrates Westside motorists

CSX train blocked Stockton Street Friday for nearly 2 hours

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Drivers on Stockton Street near Interstate 10 were the latest group of motorists to be frustrated by roads blocked by trains.

Friday morning, the road was blocked for nearly two hours. Most of that time, the train was not moving.

Truck drivers trying to make deliveries in the area said it was impossible to turn around and go another way.

"I have to go to Beaver Street, and as soon as I got off (the interstate) and turned right, the train was there," said Tony, a truck driver who didn't want to give his last name. "I was thinking, maybe it was just stopping (to) change parts ... it probably wasn't going to be too long. So I was waiting and waiting and waiting."

By 11 a.m., the train and did move and traffic returned to normal. News4Jax asked CSX about the blockage, but it had not responded by 3 p.m.

Earlier this week, City Councilman Jim Love held a special meeting to discussed trains blocking road in the Ortega area. Residents are asking the city to build other access points into neighborhoods that could be used in case a trains block their access. They claim it is important not only to residents, but for emergency vehicles as well.
