City of Jacksonville repairing vandalized signs

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office looking for surveillance video of vandals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Vandals either ran over, pulled down or cut off a dozen or more stop and street signs in Springfield over the weekend.

The city of Jacksonville hasn't released a final number of signs damaged, but several stop signs were among those damaged or knocked over, which creates a risk for traffic accidents at those intersections.

Springfield resident Nick Vihrachoff said he is taking extra care in intersections near his home because drivers may blow through the intersections without stop signs.

"It's difficult as it is to make people come to a complete stop , but to hear people are taking our stop signs down," said Vihrachoff. "We're on a grid system here in Springfield. It's dangerous."

Crews were in the community Monday morning replacing the signs, which the city said costs the city between $300 and $500 each.

The vandalism is under investigation and police are looking for surveillance video from area businesses that could help lead them to who caused the damage.

The damage itself is a crime, but if someone were to be killed in one of the intersections missing a stop sign, authorities say the person who took down the sign could face a manslaughter charge.

Anyone with information that could help police is asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500.
