Students receive medical scholarships

Northeast Florida Medical Society awards $20,000 to top students

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Northeast Florida Medical Society handed out scholarship money Thursday night.

Four college freshman received $20,000 -- that's $5,000 each to go towards their college education.

Channel 4's Rob Sweeting presented Glennika Walker, Tamara Baffour, Merary Cruz and Samuel Mitchell with their awards Thursday night at the Deerwood Country Club on the Southside.

All four of the students are going into the medical field: Samuel Mitchell is headed to FAMU to study pharmacy. Tamara Baffour is going to FSU to study nursing. Glennika Walker is also going to FSU, studying exercise science and physical therapy. Merary Cruz is headed to Hoffstra University in New York City, where she plans on studying biology and would like to work in cardiology and neurology.

This is the second year the Northeast Florida Medical Society Foundation has given out scholarship money. The awards go to the students with high academic achievement who plan to go into the medical field.
