Survey finds improvements needed in Jacksonville Beach

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – A recent survey among people frequenting Jacksonville Beach shows some changes need to be made to improve its downtown area.

The survey issued by the city was released Monday, and it asked more than 60 people what changes they would make to Jax Beach to improve the quality of life and make the location more desirable.

Parking was one of the main issues, and others said they'd like to see more restaurants.

When people were asked if there were enough venues like coffee shops, retail stores and restaurants, more than 60 percent said no.

"We have Tire Kingdoms and car repair shops, but when you go to a lot of other beach areas they have beautiful restaurants and art museums," said Gail Tetrault, a beachgoer.

News4Jax decided to conduct its own survey and the issues were the same. More than 50 percent of those who filled out the survey agreed -- parking was a nightmare.

"It's a big pain for families trying to enjoy the beach," said Tetrault. "You better bring cash because you know you got to pay to park most of the time."

Others said there were enough bars but not enough entertainment options for those under the age of 18. Ryan Sullivan, another beachgoer, agreed.

"Kids want to be on the beaches. They want to have fun," said Sullivan. "They need more entertainment like skate parks."

But 65 percent of voters said there aren't enough balanced business in the area. When asked if they would be in favor of increasing the building height limit from 35 feet to 55 feet to improve business development, nearly 70 percent said no.

The survey did, however, highlight that Jax Beach was a desirable area to bring friends. Many said they felt safe, and they liked the police presence.
