BRUNSWICK, Ga. – A 20-year-old man charged in two separate killings, including the death of a 22-year-old mother of two, was denied bond in court Monday in the stabbings of a Glynn County couple.
Raymond Brasiel appeared in court on charges of murder and aggravated assault in the stabbing death of 50-year-old Bobby Lee Jenks and stabbing of Jenks' wife, 56-year-old Mickie Lee Jenks, on Friday in Glynn County. Mickie remains in a Savannah hospital.
Brasiel is also facing a homicide charge in the death of Amber Whited (pictured, below), according to the Glynn County sheriff. His first appearance on that charge may come Tuesday.
Brasiel told the judge he could not afford an attorney, so he will be given one.
None of the victims' families were in court Monday. Whited's family said they were not ready to see the man connected to her death.
During the hearing, Brasiel said he was not feeling well, and the judge allowed him to sit down. He was assisted by deputies as he left the courtroom.
Glynn County police found the body believed to be that of Whited on Sunday afternoon in a wooded area off of Bladen Road at Highway 99.
Whited had been missing since Tuesday.
A memorial rests close to where her body was discovered. It's where people went Monday to grieve.
"She was a neighbor," La Detrice Nelson said. "It could have been a family member or one of my children. So as a human being, I'm here to show moral support."
One of Brasiel's old friends spoke about what he was like.
"Just a regular country guy, just a young boy getting a start in life," said the woman who didn't want to be identified. "Usually he's happy. I don't think I've ever seen him upset."
She said she last saw Brasiel on Thursday afternoon when he had come to her mother's house and was talking to them. She said Brasiel looked a little off that day.
"He had scratches on his arm and on the side of his face," she said. "My mother asked how he got them. He said he was walking in Brunswick, looking for a job, got too hot and passed out on the sidewalk."
The woman said Brasiel had been suicidal a couple of months ago and was hospitalized.
Police have not said if there is a connection between the victims and Brasiel.
