A man wanted in connection with an assault on a Pittsburgh Steelers player was arrested Friday at a motel in Alachua County, according to investigators.
Jerrell Whitlock, 26, who's from the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, was taken into custody along with his girlfriend, Precious Gethers.
Whitlock was wanted in connection with an assault on Mike Adams, offensive tackle for the Steelers. Adams was the victim of a carjacking and was reportedly stabbed twice in the stomach by Whitlock, according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, which received tips earlier this week that Whitlock may have been in its county.
Whitlock was also wanted for violating the conditions of his probation/parole on a 2006 conviction for firearms not to be carried without a license. The Pittsburgh Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police and several other jurisdictions had been searching for Whitlock for the past week and a half.
Investigators said the capture was only possible because of tips called into Crime Stoppers of Columbia County.
Gethers was arrested on warrants out of Pittsburgh for aiding and abetting in Whitlock's escape and child endangerment. They have a 3-year-old son together who they brought with them when they fled Pennsylvania, deputies said.
