Garrette McCoy, 22, died at UF Health Jacksonville. His father, who is in his 40s, was taken to the same hospital with life-threatening injuries.

JSO said several witnesses were taken downtown for questioning.

"I heard a lot of screaming. I was taking my trash out. It's kind of sad. It's sad for someone to get stabbed and lose their life," said Michael Keffer, who lives in the complex.

Keffer said he thought kids were fighting and when he went over to see what was going on, he saw blood everywhere.

Channel 4 talked to another man who lives at the complex. He said police are called there often.

"At least every other week, some minor incident or something else. Less than a month ago we had somebody else stabbed here also," said Jerid Cozart.

Cozart has been living at the complex for about 10 years and said he's talked to the apartment manager to get a security guard at the complex.

"When I originally started here there was a lot of prostitution and drugs, they cleared it up a little, but lately it's been getting a lot worse again," said Cozart.

Police are not sure what led up to the stabbing and believe there may have been an argument.
