Teacher disciplined for asking students to role-play as slaves

Paraprofessionals objected, told principal about teacher's behavior

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Richard Wright Jr., a music teacher at Alden Road Exceptional Center, has been suspended 30 days without pay after Duval County Public Schools found he asked severely intellectually disabled students to behave as slaves while being chased by dogs.

According to the investigation, this was to have been part of lesson in which Wright wanted the students to sing a song related to the Civil Rights Movement. He asked two paraprofessionals. who were black, to hold stuffed animals and pretend to be the dogs. They were both offended and refused, then reported it to the principal.

School administrators found Wright had acted with significantly poor judgment.
