Thanksgiving meals delivered to homebound

St. Vincent's, Meals on Wheels deliver 500 Thanksgiving meals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Meals on Wheels program in Jacksonville cooks food for people who are homebound 363 days a year. But because the organization takes Thanksgiving and Christmas Days off, St. Vincent's Hospital steps in to help those who are homebound get a hot meal during the holidays.

This year marks the 19th year that Meals on Wheels, St. Vincent's, and local taxi companies have teamed up to make sure those who rely on Meals on Wheels aren't disappointed.

"To have a delicious meal prepared for them, I think it's probably a little bit of heaven," said volunteer Sister Cora Ann.

The food and nutrition team at St. Vincent's Riverside prepared a menu consisting of 150 pounds of turkey, 125 pounds of green beans, 125 pounds of mashed potatoes and 125 pounds of dressing.

50 Taxi cabs delivered 500 meals to people across Jacksonville Thursday morning. The cab drivers donate their time and gasoline to ensure the meals get delivered.

"Thanksgiving is the time to give back and just show our appreciation for the elderly in the community," said cab driver, Latonya Hudson.
