Three men arrested in armed robbery
Deputies: Men robbed St. Augustine store at gunpoint
Three men were arrested in connection with an armed robbery at a Kangaroo convenience store in St. Augustine on Sunday night, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
The robbery was reported at 8:30 p.m. at the Kangaroo on Wildwood Drive and U.S. 1.
Two men entered the store and one of them had a handgun, according to SJCSO. They took an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes and fled.
"Deputies responding to the area almost immediately spotted the suspects leaving the trailer park nearby and the vehicle was traveling westbound on Wildwood Drive. Deputy gave pursuit," said Kevin Kelshaw with the SJCSO.
The driver refused to stop and sped away, deputies said.
Deputies pursued the suspects' vehicle and deployed stop sticks in the area of Cheyenne Drive.
"Around the Coronado neighborhood, one of the females was thrown out of the suspects' vehicle. We put stop sticks on the vehicle around the Treaty Park area. The suspect vehicle was PIT'ed by the deputy's car which ended up in the driveway, almost to 207," said Kelshaw.
The three suspects fled on foot into a heavily wooded area and two were captured quickly.
One of the captured suspects, Tyrus Kornegy, 28, sustained a gunshot wound to the back, believed to have been accidental from one of the other suspects during the pursuit.
Kornegy was transported to UF Health by air ambulance with life-threatening injuries.
The second captured suspect, Deshawn Perkins, 23, complained of chest pains and was transported to Flagler Hospital.
The third suspect, Marcus Trumbly, was captured shortly after 1 a.m. Monday off Wildwood Drive.
The suspects are facing multiple charges as the investigation continues.
