JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is trying to figure out what caused a vehicle to end up in the St. Johns River and the driver to be ejected after a crash early Tuesday morning.

"When they arrived, they found that the vehicle had left the roadway and the driver was ejected," said Sgt. J. B. Yarbrough.

Officers said the vehicle lost control, left the roadway and overturned before landing in the river.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded and transported the driver to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The JSO traffic homicide unit responded and began investigating.

A1A was closed at Wonderwood Drive for several hours while police investigated.

Around 6:45 a.m. the truck was fished out of the river and towed away.

The crash affected the St. Johns River Ferry at Mayport Village. The owner said that ferry was delayed but would resume after lanes reopened, which happened just before 7 a.m.
