UNF recognizes 11 World War II veterans

2 POWs among those honored at meet-and-greet event

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Members of the Greatest Generation met with students Monday at the University of North Florida to share their experience fighting in World War II.

Two of the 11 veterans recognized at the UNF Military and Veterans Resource Center are former prisoners of war.

Among those recognized were:

  • Howard “Mike” Spencer, Army Air Corps
  • John Francis Frank, US Navy
  • Andy Ramotnik, Army Air Corps
  • LeRoy Daniel Haines Jr., US Army
  • Harold Ryce, US Army
  • Bill Ingram, US Navy

They took part in a meet-and-greet event and answered questions from students.

Frank, who took part in the Normandy invasion, displayed a German helmet with a bullet hole in it that was among artifacts on display at the Military Museum of North Florida and UNF's Thomas G. Carpenter Library.

“It's dedicated to something that happened so many year's ago,” Frank said. “I'm glad I was part of it.”
