According to the Kennedy Space Center's website, this is the fourth in a series of launches to put Navy satellites into orbit. The satellites are designed to help improve communications for U.S. military forces.

The Atlas V rocket was introduced in 2002, and the Atlas program has logged more than 600 launches to date.

On Monday morning, crews put the rocket into position on the launch pad. At takeoff, the Atlas V generated about 2.5 million pounds of thrust.
