Unusual debris washes up on Jacksonville Beach

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – A mysterious piece of debris on Jacksonville Beach has residents puzzled.

The debris appears to have washed up Thursday morning, and viewers have been sending photos of the unusual item to News4Jax.

The Jacksonville Beach Lifeguard Captain said he isn't sure what it is or where it came from.

He said it appears to be made out of fiberglass or some sort of flexible material and that it could have been in the water for a few months, because of the barnacle growth on it.

No letters or numbers are visible on the artifact to indicate where it might have come from.

The captain said he is sending the pictures of the item to the Coast Guard to see if there is any interest in tracking down the artifact's origin. If there is, the Coast Guard will investigate. If not, the debris will be recycled.
