2012: A series of protests and attacks against diplomatic missions in the Middle East, Asia, and Europe begins with an attack by a heavily armed group on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. A second assault the following morning at the Benghazi compound left four dead, including J. Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya.
