Teen dies after drinking liquid meth
Mexican high school student trying to persuade inspectors that it was apple juice
A Mexican high school student is dead after drinking liquid methamphetamine at a border crossing checkpoint.
The boy was trying to persuade inspectors that it was only apple juice, The Associated Press reported, citing an autopsy report released Wednesday.
Cruz Marcelino Velazquez, 16, volunteered to take a "big sip" from the bottle at the San Ysidro port of entry in November.
After being handcuffed and taken into a nearby office, he began screaming in pain and shouted "My heart! My heart!" in Spanish, the AP reported.
The boy died hours later at a hospital.
The autopsy report doesn't indicate whether inspectors asked Velazquez to drink the liquid or whether they tried to stop him when he volunteered.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection had no immediate comment.
