A group from the Vietnam Veterans of America and other supporters gathered early Friday for a wreath-laying ceremony to honor the more than 58,000 Americans who died in that war.

Gathered along the Northbank Riverwalk, they dropped a wreath into the St. Johns River, saying it was both a memorial for fallen heroes and honoring those still living.

"As we age, for us, it's a celebration," said David Payne, a veteran from Alabama.

About 900 members of the Vietnam Veterans of America are in Jacksonville this week for the group's national convention, setting its agenda for the next two years.
