Volunteers renovate house for oldest woman in city

Repairs are surprise for Blanche Cobb, 114, who's lived in home 80 years

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The oldest woman in Jacksonville has a newly renovated house thanks to community volunteers.

Blanche Cobb, 114, has lived in her home for nearly 40 years, and it's gotten harder for her to fix it up.

But she'll get a nice surprise when she comes home to a repainted house with repaired floors and a freshly landscaped yard.

"It's just amazing," said Shirley Thomas, Cobb's daughter. "It's just great, and I thank everyone who's here for what they are doing for my mom."

Cobb raised 13 children and has welcomed more than 60 grandchildren and great grandchildren to her home over the past eight decades.

The Home Depot and a group called Breaking The Silence came together to make Cobb's home a better place for her and her 83-year-old daughter, who lives with her.

"As a community we can do anything," volunteer Sirretta Williams said. "We can come together, bring our brooms, our rakes, our talents and our gifts to come help especially our senior citizens."

Thomas said she hopes this community story will encourage others to help those in need around them, especially the elderly.

"It is very good for everyone to come out and help a senior," Thomas said. "If you see a senior trying to get across the road or whatever, help her."

Breaking the Silence Jacksonville is always looking for donations.

One of the things the group is trying to do right now is raise money to buy Cobb a specialty bed that will lift her onto the bed.
