What to know about taxes and health care

Expert gives tips on filing taxes with the Affordable Care Act

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Tax time is already complex as is, but for many this year there have been an added layer of confusion now that health care is part of the tax code.

It has caused a lot of taxpayers who enrolled in the Affordable Care Act some confusion and has even affected people who have private insurance.

However, with this added confusion, there are some things people need to know.

First, if you have private insurance there will be a new box you need to mark that you have insurance-- otherwise you will be penalized and taxed.

Jim White is a certified public accountant with the LBA group. He said the people who will have the most difficulty will be taxpayers who enrolled in a government health care exchange. He also said that often times people with lower income can't afford to pay someone to do their taxes for them.

"So you're adding cost to filling out their tax returns -- to people that often times can't afford pay someone to do that," White said. "So they're doing it themselves, which would lead to more potential error."

The new form enrollees will have to use is complex -- it's form 8962 and it's not something that websites like Turbo Tax can fill in immediately. It requires people to manually fill in monthly premiums they pay. The instructions for the form is also very complicated.

"It has been very fluid. In fact, if you pull up the form on IRS website it'll tell you that the instructions are still in draft form," White said. "I did that just today in preparation for us talking and today it's still in draft form."

To add to an already difficult tax season, 800,000 health care enrollee's were mailed the wrong tax forms last week.
