Toxic chemicals could be lurking in your cosmetics

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – We live in a world where makeup is big business. In fact, sales are estimated to reach over $58 billion this year for cosmetics. However, as most people focus on how makeup makes them look, they may be missing out on what's lurking inside that may potentially damage their health.

Watch out for phthalates, which are hidden in fragrance in cosmetic and personal care products. They are possible endocrine disruptors and, according to the Breast Cancer Fund, may cause developmental and reproductive toxicity.

"Phthalates make things absorb better to your skin so the scent lingers, but phthalates are hormone disrupters," explained Jennifer Taggart, an environmental lawyer.

Also, look for lead. Often found in sunscreen, lipstick, and foundation, lead is a neurotoxin which can cause behavioral and learning problems. It's also been linked to infertility, early puberty, and miscarriages.

Aluminum is commonly used as pigments, thickening agents, and in antiperspirants. However, it is believed to mimic estrogen, which can lead to DNA damage.

Finally, read your makeup label. Watch for FD&C colors and coal tar. Certain colorings can cause allergic reactions and have been linked to various health problems. Coal tar has been linked to cancer.
