Woman, 21, charged with DUI manslaughter

Passenger, another passenger's unborn baby died in Nov. 2 crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 21-year-old Middleburg woman is charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter as a result of a crash on the Northside on Nov. 2 that killed her passenger and another passenger's unborn child.

According to the arrest report, Alexandria Powers was driving with Chasity Taylor and Paige Hampton just before 2 a.m. on New Kings Road when she veered over the raised median, crossed the opposite lanes and slammed into trees along the road.

Taylor died at the scene and Hampton, who was 5 months pregnant, suffered serious injuries and had to be extracted from the car. Hampton lost her baby as a result of her injuries.

The report indicated that Powers was speeding, had marijuana in her system and was over the legal blood alcohol limit. Her initial test at the hospital showed a .254 blood alcohol level and a second test hours later showed a .180 blood alcohol level, according to the report.

Powers is being held on more than $350,000 bond.
