In October 2013, Costarakis solicited an undercover detective to kill her daughter-in law, Angela Costarakis, for the sum of $5,000. Costarakis told the undercover detective that her daughter-in-law was a bad mother to her 6-year-old granddaughter and was planning on taking the child with her after she divorced her son.

Costarakis provided the victim's picture to the detective, as well as the victim's address and what kind of vehicle she drove.

During the undercover meetings, Costarakis gave the detective multiple cash payments, totaling $2,000, and promised him that he would receive the rest of the $5,000 once her daughter-in-law was dead.

The defendant also told him that the victim wore expensive jewelry and that once the job was complete, he could take the jewelry off the victim's body and sell it.
