Woman bitten by shark in Central Florida

Officials say woman's bite serious

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – Brevard County Fire and Rescue said a 28-year-old woman was bitten by a shark in her leg Sunday afternoon. The incident happened at 2:30 p.m. at Cocoa Beach near 11th Street.

There were people standing near her who were able to pull her out of the water.

"I looked over at her and she said, 'Somebody help me,' and I saw the fin come up and slap her in the face," witness Holly Peterson said. "She said, 'It got me!' So I grabbed her hand and drug her back to the shore.

Other witnesses standing by watched the situation unfold in a matter of seconds.

"I had sat down and all of a sudden I saw Bridgette, my fiancée, and Holly dragging her in from the water and I just saw blood and got on the phone and went over there. It got her back calf pretty good," said witness Shawn Boen.

The victim was taken in an ambulance to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

Brevard County Fire and Rescue said the bite was serious.
