Woman comes face to face with car burglar

Police tell victim man has been stealing from cars for weeks

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman came face to face with a man police told her has been committing car burglaries for weeks.

The incident happened just after 3:30 a.m. Saturday on Moorgate Court, off Old Kings Road South on the Southside.

According to the woman who described the man's getaway vehicle, the vehicle was stolen weeks ago.

"He was driving a red Mini Cooper ... down the street," she said. "He couldn't have gone any faster. Apparently that vehicle was stolen a few weeks back and police are looking for him."

She didn't expect to come face to face with the man police told her they have been seeking for weeks, but Saturday morning that was the case when the mother of two woke to feed her baby boy.

"I looked out here and saw a man in my car. I thought I was seeing things," she said.

But she wasn't seeing things; there was a man rummaging through her Tahoe, so with adrenaline pumping, she bolted out of her home.

"I just ran outside and I yelled, 'Hey!' really loud, and he took off as fast as lightning and hopped in the car," she said. "He was gone so fast."

She said the thief only got away with an old radar gun, but she hopes this is a warning to everyone to lock their doors.

"Opening the garage was not the right idea because even though I wanted him gone, he could've come in or done something more dangerous than just leaving," she said. "But he did finally leave and the cops are still looking him, so everyone just needs to lock their doors and be aware of suspicious activity."

Police told her the red Mini Cooper the man was driving had been stolen weeks ago. If you see a car matching this description, maybe late at night in your area, you may want to call police. Also, it's recommended you always lock your doors.
