Woman dies, man missing in boating tragedy

Crews continue to search for boater on Halfmoon Lake in Ocala National Forest

OCALA, Fla. – A boating tragedy on a lake in the Ocala National Forest dumped a family of five, including two children, into the water, leaving a man missing and a woman dead, according to a family member.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. Sunday on Halfmoon Lake near Silver Springs.

According to officials, the family was in a canoe, which took on some water and capsized.  Four of the occupants made it to shore, but one of the men never surfaced, officials said.

"A concerned boater that was across the lake heard some yelling and came over and assisted in the rescue.  During the rescue, one of the occupants came up missing," an official said.

The missing man's mother died after being pulled from the water, a family member told Local 6.

It's not known if any life jackets were on the boat, but Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said searchers did not find any in the search area.

No other details have been released.
