Woman killed in vacant home in NW Jax

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Homicide detectives are investigating after a woman was found dead Monday morning in the detached garage of a vacant home at 1901 West 3rd Street.

Police said the homeless victim, Veronica Clayton, 62, had been sleeping in the detached garage of the vacant residence over the last few months.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Dan Janson speaking at the scene would not be specific, but the nature of the injuries make them suspect that she was killed.

"There might be some indication of foul play," Janson said. "We can't say that definitively until we get the medical examiner on scene and check the body."

In announcing the victim's identity late Monday night, police called her killing a murder.

Police said there were broken windows at the scene, but that could be from the fact that it is an abandoned property, not a sign of forced entry.

Anyone with any information on this case is asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500.
