Woods fire shuts down part of Monument Road, destroys abandoned home

Forestry officials say 1-acre fire is 100% contained

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 1-acre woods fire that destroyed an abandoned home in the Arlington area was 100 percent contained as of 6 p.m. Wednesday, the Florida Forest Service said.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said a call came in about 4:45 p.m. regarding the fire in the woods off Causey Lane, near the intersection of Monument and St. Johns Bluff roads.

All lanes in both directions of Monument Road were closed for several hours between St. Johns Bluff and Lee roads, as firefighters and two forestry bulldozers battled the blaze.

The road reopened just before 8 p.m.

The Florida Forest Service and Fire Rescue are investigating the cause of the fire.
