Young woman dead after shooting on Westside

Shooting happened on Springtree Rd.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 22-year-old woman returning home early Friday morning was shot and killed in her Westside driveway.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says Amber Bass was coming back from a night out with friends about 2:45 a.m. when she was shot on Springtree Road, which is near Fouraker Road  and Old Middleburg Road.

According to JSO, the woman's sister, heard a scream outside the home, and when she went outside to check on her, the woman was lying unresponsive in the driveway.

Police said they were working to identify suspects and are urging people in the area to remain vigilant.

"There was no indication as to who may have done it, we're getting as much information as we can to move forward," Sgt T.K. Waters said. "We're not searching right now. We're gathering information so we can start a search as quickly as possible."

The general manager of the Chili's restaurant in Fleming Island confirmed that Bass worked there and the staff was "absolutely devastated" by her death.

Neighbors say that there have been other instances of crime in the neighborhood recently.

"My cars got broken into twice. Two separate times. The last time both cars got broken into. It was suggested by the cops to go ahead and but a motion sensor," Essick Mays said.

He says he put in a surveillance camera at his house and is now hoping that can be of some assistance to police in their investigation.

"The first time I put them up, all they showed was my yard. I told the guy to put it up more so I could see the street. Just in case somebody comes in my yard. So hopefully it helps."
