Brantley Standoff Ends With Man's Suicide

Wife Says Man Choked, Threatened To Kill Her

POSTED: Thursday, July 24, 2008

A standoff Thursday with an armed man in a Brantley County home involving deputies from three counties, two SWAT teams and the Georgia State Patrol ended with the man taking his own life, investigators said.

Brantley County deputies responded to the home on Lynehaven Lane near Atkinson before dawn after getting a call from a woman who said her husband had choked her and threatened to kill her.

The woman was able to get away with her children and call authorities.

Knowing the man had guns in the house and had made threats, the Brantley County Sheriff's Office surrounded the house and called for assistance from the SWAT teams of Glynn County Sheriff's Office, Waycross police and the Georgia State Patrol.

Witnesses told Channel 4 that the sound of gunfire had come from inside the house.

After having no contact with the man for hours, a special robot entered the home about 2:30 p.m. and sent back images showing the man dead.

Brantley County officials said it appeared the man took his own life.

The man's name had not been released as of 5 p.m. Thursday.
