North Georgia Police Chief Suspended During Investigation

POSTED: 10:20 a.m. EDT July 30, 2003

A north Georgia police chief has been suspended with pay during an investigation into charges that he falsified an accident report and offered to drop a DUI citation in exchange for sexual favors.

East Ellijay Police Chief Larry SeaboltEast Ellijay Police Chief Larry Seabolt, 54, is charged with insurance fraud, false statements and violation of oath of office. He was arrested Monday.

District Attorney Darrell Wilson asked for the investigation after receiving complaints that Seabolt fabricated a report on behalf of Steve West -- the son of East Ellijay's mayor -- so West could collect insurance money.

West, 42, also was arrested Monday and charged with insurance fraud, the GBI said.

The report indicated the single-car accident occurred in this north Georgia city, but evidence showed it actually was outside the city limits.

During the investigation, GBI agents said they learned that Seabolt approached a woman in court in February and said he would reduce or destroy her citation for driving under the influence in exchange for sex.
