Fire Damages Historic Building At Glynn Academy
After a lightning strike overnight knocked out power to Glynn Academy, officials went in about 2 a.m. to reset the breakers. Firefighters were alerted that the building was on fire when smoke was noticed at a downtown fire station about 5:30 a.m.When the first unit arrived, flames were shooting from the roof.Brunswick called on Glynn County to bring its ladder truck to help fight the blaze in the two-story structure. The fire was declared under control about 7 a.m.No one was hurt, but the building suffered extensive damage. The roof on part of the school is completely gone and several classrooms were destroyed."That's probably the first thing I thought of... the lighting," said Al Boudreau, Glynn Academy's facilities director. "Sure enough, when I got here this morning ... the building was burning from the top down."Observers said that because much of the wood was heart-of-pine, the fire took a long time to extinguish.Although only the building that houses classrooms for 500 freshmen was damaged, all classes at Glynn Academy were canceled for the day. In addition to classrooms, student lockers and staff members' belongings were damaged or destroyed.Administrators and teachers are meeting to try to decide where to hold classes on Monday. Two local churches have been contacted about using their facilities. The Home Depot, Staples and local businesses have donated supplies to replace some of what was lost. The Glynn County Board of Education held a special meeting Friday afternoon to discuss the damage, insurance coverage and other issues. Students who have homerooms in the annex building were instructed to report to the auditorium at 8:30 a.m. Monday.Memories of the school go back generations."This is a school my mom and dad met at ... back in who knows when," parent Becky Bullard told Channel 4's Tammie Fields. "I went here as a high school student and my son, who's now 16, goes here also."The annex, built in 1889 and renovated several times, is one of the 10 buildings that make up the Glynn Academy campus. Former teacher Star Wheeler said it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Copyright 2006 by News4Jax.com. All rights reserved.
